Yiayia Next Door's Yemista by Yiayia Next Door & Maya Barnstone

A nostalgic portrait of a shared table where food is an act of love. This is the story of Yiayia Next Door— the Greek grandmother who passed meals over the neighbouring fence during a difficult time in Daniel and Luke Mancuso’s lives. This is one of the many dishes that was shared between neighbours, interpreted through the eyes of painter Maya Barnstone.

The painting centres on a familiar Greek-Australian table setting: outdoors, with a hint of green in the background alluding to Yiayia and Papou’s vegetable garden. A basket of bread sits at the centre, atop a handmade crocheted tablecloth that Yiayia always lays with care. The yemista (stuffed peppers) are served on vintage floral stoneware plates — well-loved objects that have become an emblem of Greek-Australian life.

Rooted in her own Greek heritage, Maya brings the scene vividly to life. The philosophy of filotimo, love and generosity towards one’s neighbour, is evident in every detail, while her study of light and colour evokes nostalgia, warmth, and hope.

Yiayia Next Door

Greek Grandmother

Yiayia Next Door began with a simple act of kindness: home-cooked meals passed over a fence by a Greek grandmother to her neighbours, brothers Daniel and Luke Mancuso, during one of the most difficult periods of their lives as they lost their mother to domestic violence. What started as quiet generosity grew into a nationally loved story about the power of community, compassion, and food as a language of care. The project has since evolved into a social movement, led by Daniel and Luke, advocating for safer communities and raising awareness around family violence. Through their cookbook, storytelling, and continuous community work, Yiayia Next Door celebrates the belief that small, everyday gestures — a plate of food, a steady presence, an open heart — can help rebuild lives. At its centre remains Yiayia herself: a symbol of love, resilience, and the instinctive Greek tradition of feeding others as an expression of hope.

Maya Barnstone

Artist

Maya Barnstone is an American-born painter now based in Sydney. With Greek heritage, she draws deeply from the influence of her late grandmother, Helle Tzalopoulou-Barnstone — a prolific artist whose creative legacy continues through Maya’s own practice. Maya completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School, majoring in painting. Her work often centres on self-portraits, social scenes, and imagined interiors and landscapes. She embraces quirky, intentionally skewed perspectives and a playful use of light and shadow. Working primarily with acrylic on handmade timber boards, Maya builds her paintings through thick, layered applications of paint, creating rich, tactile surfaces that verge on the sculptural.

A home-style recipe from your friendly neighbourhood Yiayia. This is comfort food at its best, from the book Yiayia Next Door (Plum).

  • 400g medium grain rice
  • Boiling water, to cover
  • 3 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 500g mince (half beef, half pork, minced twice yiayia says the butcher will do this for you if you ask nicely)
  • 2 tsp ground paprika
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 tbsp chopped flatleaf parsley
  • 8 large red or green capcisums
  • 625ml boiling water

Step 1.
Preheat the oven to 220C (200 fan-forced). Pour rice into a saucepan, cover with boiling water, then place over medium heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Step 2.
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat, add the onion and cook for 5 minutes or until soft and translucent. Increased the heat to medium-hiigh, then add the mince and cook, breaking up any lumps with the back of a wooden spoon, for 7 minutes or until browned.
Step 3.
Stir through par-cooked rice, paprika, salt, oregano, and parsley, then remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
Step 4.
To prepare the capsicums, working with one capsicum at a time, push down on the stalk, then pull up to remove the stalk and core in one swift action. Spoon the mince mixture evenly into the hollowed out capcisums, then transfer to a roasting tin, making sure the capsicums are standing upright.
Step 5.
Divide 250ml of boiling water into the base of the tin. Transfer to the oven and roast 50-60 minutes, covering with foil if the tops start to burn, until the capsicums are soft and cooked through.
