Maya Barnstone

Artist
Maya Barnstone
Maya Barnstone is an American-born painter now based in Sydney. With Greek heritage, she draws deeply from the influence of her late grandmother, Helle Tzalopoulou-Barnstone — a prolific artist whose creative legacy continues through Maya’s own practice. Maya completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the National Art School, majoring in painting. Her work often centres on self-portraits, social scenes, and imagined interiors and landscapes. She embraces quirky, intentionally skewed perspectives and a playful use of light and shadow. Working primarily with acrylic on handmade timber boards, Maya builds her paintings through thick, layered applications of paint, creating rich, tactile surfaces that verge on the sculptural.

Yiayia Next Door's Yemista by Yiayia Next Door & Maya Barnstone

A nostalgic portrait of a shared table where food is an act of love. This is the story of Yiayia Next Door— the Greek grandmother who passed meals over the neighbouring fence during a difficult time in Daniel and Luke Mancuso’s lives. This is one of the many dishes that was shared between neighbours, interpreted through the eyes of painter Maya Barnstone. (Please note, this poster will ship from 18 December)

The painting centres on a familiar Greek-Australian table setting: outdoors, with a hint of green in the background alluding to Yiayia and Papou’s vegetable garden. A basket of bread sits at the centre, atop a handmade crocheted tablecloth that Yiayia always lays with care. The yemista (stuffed peppers) are served on vintage floral stoneware plates — well-loved objects that have become an emblem of Greek-Australian life.

Rooted in her own Greek heritage, Maya brings the scene vividly to life. The philosophy of filotimo, love and generosity towards one’s neighbour, is evident in every detail, while her study of light and colour evokes nostalgia, warmth, and hope.
