An ode to the joy of girlhood, artist Beci Orpin and Mali Bakes’ Patti Chimkire have come together for this portrait of a Matcha Chiffon Roll. It turns out that the artist and chef were mutually obsessed with each other’s work, so this is a serendipitous collaboration from two Melbourne-based creatives.

At Mali Bakes, chef Patti Chimkire produces retro-inspired custom celebration cakes and cakes by-the-slice on weekends. The name ‘Mali’ is the Thai word for ‘jasmine’, a word that conjures sweet childhood memories for Patti that she channels into her creations.

Artist Beci Orpin’s work celebrates women who create, in her signature application of colour, shape and optimism that has made her an Australian icon and industry legend. Here, Beci has depicted the beautiful ingredients of the Matcha Chiffon Roll while also capturing the most essential element of the recipe, Patti herself.

Patchanida Chimkire & Beci Orpin

THE CHEF:
Born and raised in Bangkok, pastry chef Patti Chimkire made the move to Melbourne in 2015. After gaining experience at Shortstop Donuts and Proud Mary Cafe, Patti launched Mali Bakes in 2019, turning it from a lockdown project into one of Melbourne's sweetest stories. With stores in Fitzroy and Thornbury, Mali Bakes blends the lively vibes of Thailand and Melbourne to create cakes that not only look oh-so charming but also full of extraordinary flavours.

THE ARTIST:
Beci Orpin is a multidisciplinary artist, designer and author based in Melbourne whose broad practice is united by a signature application of colour, shape and optimism.

Across her 25 year career, Beci has remained committed to exploring art as a vehicle to form community. Her shared Brunswick studio was specifically established in 2022 to serve as a gathering point for the next generation of creatives to come together, collaborate, explore and further understand how beautiful work can help us build beautiful lives.
