ROME FOOD TIPS

Rome Guide

Rome: An Eating & Drinking Guide by Gemma Leslie

I get asked for Rome recommendations almost as much as Melbourne ones, so here it is… my Rome list! The restaurants, cafés and wine bars I love, and the ones I send every friend to.

Pair it with our Italian Minis and you’re halfway there already. Buon appetito!

L’Antidoto (Restaurant) - Vicolo del Bologna, 19, 00153 Rome

A cosy spot with only eight tables, cooking modern Italian food. There’s no wine list. Just tell them what you like and they’ll suggest the perfect pairing. This is the restaurant that made me ask: if this isn’t what the new wave of Roman chefs is doing, then what is?

La Matriciana (Restaurant) - Via del Viminale, 44, 00184 Rome

Established in 1870, this traditional Roman restaurant is known for its authentic dishes, and the interior is magnificent. Business folks do lunch here, and while in Oz that might put you off, in Rome it adds to the experience. Reservation recommended.

Cul de Sac (Restaurant) - Piazza di Pasquino, 73, 00186 Rome

A casual eatery near Piazza Navona, famous for its extensive wine list and simple, delicious food. Grab a table outside if you can.

Osteria Chiari (Restaurant) - Via del Gazometro, 13, 00154 Rome

New wave Roman cooking, all done over fire. The sea bass and pork chop stand out, but the meat cannelloni (also done over fire) and the amatriciana are very good too. Sit inside, it has a better atmosphere.

Armando al Pantheon (Restaurant) - Salita de’ Crescenzi, 31, 00186 Rome

A family-run restaurant since 1961, serving classic Roman dishes right near the Pantheon. Booking ahead is essential, and I mean a month out.

Caffè Roscioli (Café) - Piazza Benedetto Cairoli, 16, 00186 Rome

Part of the renowned Roscioli group, this café does quality espresso and light bites in a stylish setting.

Monteforte 3 SRL (Café) - Via del Pellegrino, 129, 00186 Rome

A new local favourite with a great range of pastries and coffee, all well priced. Also great for takeaway pizza. It’s right near some great shops too, like Nicola Fasano Ceramiche.

Enoteca Achilli al Parlamento (Wine Shop) - Via dei Prefetti, 15, 00186 Rome

A Michelin-starred establishment with a curated selection of special bottles.

Enoteca Trimani (Wine Shop) - Via Goito, 20, 00185 Rome

One of Rome’s oldest wine shops, with a vast and diverse collection.

Enoteca Il Goccetto (Wine Bar) - Via dei Banchi Vecchi, 14, 00186 Rome

A cosy spot with a wide range of wines by the glass, in a charming setting.

Il Vinaietto (Wine Bar) - Via del Monte della Farina, 38, 00186 Rome

A casual wine bar where everyone spills out onto the street. Very lively.

Santa Lucia (Wine Bar) - Largo Febo, 12, 00186 Rome

Not ideal for spritz lovers, but this serene spot has a good wine list and is surrounded by greenery. There’s a live band on Wednesdays too.
