The print is on the wall. It looks fine. But something is slightly off and you can't quite put your finger on it. Nine times out of ten, it's the frame. Or the absence of one. Or the wrong one.
Framing an art print is one of those things that looks simple and turns out to have a few variables. The good news is that once you understand the basics, it gets much easier. And the difference a good frame makes is soooo transformative.
Why framing matters more than people think
An unframed print is a print. A framed print is a work of art. The frame tells the room that the thing inside it matters. Without one, even a beautiful print can feel like it hasn't quite committed to being on the wall. Like a third wheel.
At Food For Everyone, every poster we make is designed with framing in mind from the beginning. Scale, proportion, the weight of the paper … all of it is considered with the frame in view. We think of framing as the final step of the work, not a separate decision you make months later.
Match the frame to the work, not the room
The most common framing mistake is choosing a frame that matches the furniture rather than the artwork. Start with the print. What's the mood of it? As a rule, go simpler than you think. A frame that disappears lets the art speak.
Our recommendation is almost always teak. It's warm without being loud, classic without being old-fashioned, and it works with virtually every artwork we make …. bold and graphic or soft and painterly. Teak has a way of making a print feel considered, wherever it lands on the wall. It's the frame we'd put on almost anything.
Perspex over glass, always
We use perspex across all our frames rather than glass. It's lighter, it won't shatter, and it protects your print just as well. We made this choice because we want our frames to be good without being prohibitively expensive. Perspex lets us do both.
Get the size right
Our posters are printed in sizes chosen specifically because they frame well. Standard sizing exists for a reason - it makes things easier and the walls look better for it. If you're buying a Food For Everyone print, our frames are made to fit.
